i just got 6 barbs 3 tiger and 3 green and they all seem to be swimming in place with their heads pointed down, almost at the 6 o'clock position and my wife is concerned. can anyone tell us why they are doing this? we haven't been very fortunate in the past keeping fish alive and have decided to give it one more shot.

Hi Bob the tank is 3years old and holds 10 gallons of water. The temp yesterday was 77 degrees but I haven't tested the ph yet.

I'm at work til the morning but my wife tells me that they are still swimming heads down. She said when she feed them they seemed to be alright but they're still swimming heads down. I'll check the ph and ammonia in the morning

No we got rid of the gravel after the last batch of fish. Cleaned the tank and set it up two weeks ago. It was running without the fish in it until this past monday when we bought the barbs.

I think that may be why they are pointing down, some fish need a solid bottom.

Try new gravel wash it out 110% before hand let drip dry to get the chlorine out add it slowly.
