02.SEP.09 - An estimated 7 million cats and dogs are killed in US shelters each year. The overpopulation of unwanted animals is an enormous problem throughout the country. Shelters are full of animals waiting for new homes while more and more are brought in everyday. You may not be able to give these animals the homes they need, but you can help combat the problem of stray animal overpopulation by one simple action – have your pet spayed or neutered.

SNAP (Spay Neuter Assistance Program) in conjunction with BAHS (Bulverde Area Humane Society) will be providing free spays and neuters for dogs and cats on Monday, September 14, in the HEB parking lot at Hwy 46 and 281 N. in Spring Branch. The procedures will be administered on a first come first serve basis and are limited to two animals per family.

If you have a medium to large dog you need to be there as early as 6 AM to sign up to better your chances. Attendance at our last two events resulted in having to turn away several animals. If your animal is chosen for surgery you will receive a time to pick them up later that day. Withhold food from your pets after 10 pm the night before the surgery, and do not give them any food or water the morning of the surgery.

Animals must be 4 months or older. Upon arrival, all dogs and cats should be restrained by a leash or in a carrier. If no carrier is available for cats they may be contained in a pillow case.

The mobile clinic can accept feral (wild) cats. For more information please contact the BAHS at 830-980-2247. If you would like more information on SNAP please visit their website at or call them at 210-673-7722.
